December 9, 2014 - Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on UNEA Implementation
Drawing more than 120 enthusiastic participants from government, civil society, business and academia, UNEP RONA convened a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue to promote regional collaboration towards implementing outcomes of the first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on 9 December in Washington, D.C. The agenda was structured around four key UNEA resolutions addressing: chemicals and waste with a focus on lead paint and mercury; global air quality; illegal trade in wildlife; and marine plastic debris and microplastics....

 

November 19, 2014 - Launch of UNEP Emissions Gap Report
Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, launched the fifth edition of UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report in a packed pressroom at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Achim Steiner; Senator Tim Wirth, Vice Chair of the UN Foundation; Andrew Steer, President and CEO of the World Resources Institute; and Chief Editor Joseph Alcamo, provided an in-depth review of the report. The report conclues that total greenhouse gas emissions must hit net zero by the second half of the century to limit global temperature rise and head off the worst impacts of climate change.....

 

November 19, 2014 - 10th Anniversary of the Champions of the Earth Award
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Gisele Bündchen were joined by over 250 guests for a Gala and Awards Ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. on 19 November 2014 to honor the year’s Champions of the Earth laureates on the occasion of the awards’ 10th anniversary.....

 

 

November 17-21, 2014 -  Global South-South Development Expo
The Organization of American States (OAS) hosted the 2014 Global South-South Development Expo in Washington, D.C. from 17 to 21 November. Under the theme of Contribution of South-South and Triangular Cooperation to Sustainable Development, UNEP’s session concentrating on scaling up best practices for protecting the environment while promoting sustainable development—titled Green Economies Are Sustainable Economies—as well as UNEP’s exhibit booth were popular attractions at the Expo.....

 

October 16-17, 2014 - Conservation Workshop focused on Arctic Migratory Bird Species
In cooperation with the Arctic Council’s Conservation of Flora and Fauna (CAFF) Working Group, UNEP RONA catalyzed and supported an effort to develop a work plan aimed at promoting an institutional management mechanism to support the conservation of Arctic migratory bird species flyways that span from the North American Arctic to the northern coast of South America. Representatives from eight governments and NGOs, coming from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, French Guiana, Paraguay, Suriname, the U.K. and the U.S., took part in the two-day workshop from 16 to 17 October in Washington, D.C. The work plan—which was featured in an informational side event at the Arctic Conservation Congress in Trondheim, Norway, in December and will be presented for approval to the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting next April— will be finalized in the coming weeks and will link to other existing instruments working to protect Arctic migratory birds.

 

June 9, 2014 - UN Celebrates World Oceans Day in Washington, D.C.
UNEP, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) held a joint World Oceans Day celebration to highlight some of the work that these organizations are undertaking to protect and conserve the oceans....

 

 

 

April 22, 2014 - Sarasota County Rallies behind World Environment Day
Sarasota County was the host community for North America’s World Environment Day (WED). As a coastal community with a positive and proactive environmental track record, Sarasota County was chosen because it complements the WED theme of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Launched on Earth Day, 22 April, WED offered the region opportunities to undertake various environmental activities during the six weeks preceding WED.
